Life seems happy and fish seem abundant for the Sama communities living on the idyllic southern coastline of the island of Sulawesi in the Molucca Sea.
Between the stubborn nomads who still live aboard their leppas – small outrigger boats – deep within the mangrove swamp and their settled cousins living in villages built on piers, two lifestyles coexist, each adapted to the environment.
But all the Bajo Lao people are threatened by the fishing methods imposed by the Chinese merchants. Young men risk their lives diving without safety stops to catch fish alive, using a cyanide mixture that poisons the coral and its ecosystem…
