Moken, Beach Combers
Synopsis | Information
A small nomadic seagoing community travels up and down the southern Burmese coast in the Andaman Sea, closely watched by government troops. The Moken live and travel in their kabangs, a kind of dugout houseboat.
They are the only seagoing nomads who live exclusively by hunting and gathering – collecting wood worms, hunting bats and pythons.
But they also wander haunted by the curse of the tortoise-goddess they cannot forgive themselves for having killed in ancient times, living on reprieve in a strange world circumscribed by complex rituals inherited from their ancestors…
