Vezos, the Battered Fringe

Synopsis | Information

The Vezos fish the west coast of Madagascar’s southern tip, in the waters of the Mozambique Channel, plying small outrigger canoes with sails.

The traditional lifestyle of these seafaring nomads, still imprinted with the cult of spirit worship, is threatened by frequent tropical storms and dwindling fishing resources.

Other Vezos make a living with their sailing freighters, magnificent dhows whispering along on the wind with a cargo of gasoline!

In the center of the large island, there are forests of balsa, the wood from which the Vezos carve their fragile canoes. Loaded onto an ox-drawn cart, the canoe hulls are hauled out of the jungle to the Manguky River which leads to the sea.
